Alabama's Workforce

Speaker: Tom Surtees, Alabama Industrial Relations

We will review current information regarding the skill-sets, education, age, etc. of our workforce and projections of jobs for the foreseeable future.  Also included will be a summary of the efforts being made by the state to develop our workforce to meet future demands.

Tom Surtees currently serves in the Bentley administration as the director of Industrial Relations, a position he has held for almost five years.  Additionally, he served as Governor Bentley’s Legislative Director during the last regular and special sessions of the Legislature.  A native of Birmingham, he attended the University of Alabama and UAB, earning both BS and MBA degrees.  He is retired from the Army Reserves and is a graduate of the US Army Command & General Staff College.

Prior to joining state government in 2004, Tom worked for more than thirty years in manufacturing, most recently as VP of Human Resources at Citation Corporation. He and his wife, Cecilia, have two married children and three grandchildren with all living in the Birmingham area.
